Kees van de Wal - Paintings
![]()
Kees van de Wal (Oirschot, 1967) paints impressions of landscapes. He is inspired by the wide, empty landscapes found on the islands in the Wadden Sea to the north of the Netherlands, and on the island of Vlieland in particular. People-less. Building-less. Full of distance, emptiness, space and peace.
The horizon plays an important role for Kees. The horizon divides what is seen into two distinct surfaces. But also vertical lines, inspired by groups of trees, find a place in his current work. Kees shoots a lot of photo’s. The photos are morphed by zooming in and by transforming colours so that abstract representations are created. Sometimes photos are deliberately blurred, for example by shooting from a moving train or car. These photo’s are the source of inspiration from which Kees creates his work. The combination of composition and grey tones he often uses create a still and subtle quality in the paintings that exudes peace and quiet. The paintings are never dissonant but aspire to harmony. Sometimes a landscape can be recognized in the work, sometimes not. This is not Kees’s primary concern. Recognisability is not of the essence. The result, the painting, is more important than the source, although the source is rarely completely abandoned. Kees deliberately doesn’t give his paintings titles so that maximum space is created for the personal interpretation of the viewer. Having first worked in acryl, Kees now works with oil on canvas and in various different formats, predominantly square. Kees studied graphics and since the end of the 90’s has followed many and varied courses in drawing, painting, etching and life drawing. In 2007 he made a conscious choice to concentrate on painting. At the present Kees is studying part-time at the Academy of Fine Arts in Arendonk, Belgium. Since November 2010 he is actively involved with the BKR (Bommelse Art Route). In addition to his involvement with the BKR and the Art, Stone and Clay Studio Route (Kunst,Kiezel en Klei Atelier Route), Kees regularly exhibits at different galleries across the country. |
