“During the period that I made this work, I painted shapes. Often more or less round shapes that I put on the canvas with large movements. In a process of painting over and painting away I searched for the right composition of one or more shapes on the canvas.
One day I was working on a painting with three shapes, one of which was partially falling off the canvas. The background was tan black. This dark background, which had become visible between the shapes, struck me, it attracted more and more attention. The shapes it had started with were less prominent. I started concentrating on this background, the residual shape became the shape. See photo #307.
Until then, all my work was flat, painted on canvas, but this painting prompted me to create my first sculpture. Inspired by the shape of the painting, I started drawing on a piece of mdf. With a jigsaw and sander I made the spatial shape, as well as the painting on a size of 100 x 80 cm. A pedestal of wood completed the whole. See photo 309a. You could walk around it, look at it from multiple sides and you could see through it. My first sculpture was a fact. A year later I had the sculpture executed in Corten steel and placed it on a concrete pedestal. See photo 309b.”

Op een dag werkte ik aan een schilderij met drie vormen, eentje viel deels van het doek af. De achtergrond was bruining zwart. Deze donkere achtergrond, die tussen de vormen zichtbaar was geworden, viel me op, hij trok meer en meer de aandacht. De vormen waar het mee was begonnen waren minder prominent aanwezig. Ik ging me concentreren op deze achtergrond, de restvorm werd de vorm. Zie foto #307.
Tot dat moment was al mijn werk plat, geschilderd op doek, maar dit schilderij zette mij ertoe mijn eerste beeld te maken. Geïnspireerd door de vorm van het schilderij begon ik te tekenen op een plaat mdf.
