This work was made shortly after Jan van de Wal, the father of the artist, died. We see the back of 16 paintings that are hung in cross form. The paintings were made by the father of the artist at the painting club in the home where he lived the last years of his life. The reversal of the canvases symbolizes remembrance. The cross shape symbolizes death.
