Silent Witness(es)

Being allowed into Kees van de Wal’s studio with my camera felt to me like being allowed into a part of Kees himself. The intimacy surprised me.
The arrangement of his tools, the remains of the paint in all kinds of plastic containers, the materials yet to be processed and projects in various stages of their creation. In addition, all the work on the walls and in storage.
My work is often about the traces that people leave behind, both physically and emotionally. That is what struck me most in this space. Details such as holes and nails in the wall where the work in progress once hung. The paint that was left behind and did not become part of the artwork. The contours of the work, such as the bag that was left behind on the floor. “It doesn’t have to be about my work,” Kees said, but everywhere you look it is about that work. I found and felt like a silent witness.

Met mijn camera toegelaten worden in de studio van Kees van de Wal voelde voor mij als toegelaten worden tot een deel van Kees zelf. De intimiteit verraste me.
De ordening van zijn gereedschap, de resten van de verf in allerhande plastic bakjes, de nog te bewerken materialen en projecten in verschillende stadia van hun ontstaan. Daarbij al het werk aan de muren en in opslag.
In mijn werk gaat het vaak over de sporen die mensen nalaten, zowel fysiek als emotioneel. Daar werd ik ook in deze ruimte het meest door getroffen. Details als gaatjes en spijkers in de muur waar ooit het in de maak zijnde werk heeft gehangen. De verf die achterbleef en geen deel uit is gaan maken van het kunstwerk. De contouren van het werk, zoals het tasje wat achterbleef op de vloer. “Het hoeft niet over mijn werk te gaan”, zei Kees, maar overal waar je kijkt gaat het over dat werk. Ik vond en voelde me een stille getuige.

The beauty of everyday life and how people are moving through it, in all their splendor, strength, vulnerability, loneliness and sometimes absurdity are for me (Marieke Boon, Delft, 1966) a constant source of wonder and inspiration. The focus of my work is on social-documentary photography and serial photography in which nature and my direct living environment are used as metaphors for larger themes. In my work I search for the traces that people leave behind, both physically and emotionally. For me, the beauty lies mainly in the details. Loneliness and transience are recurring themes, but seen with a relativizing view in which hope and humor also play a role. The story behind a photo is important to me, but I also like to leave it open to the interpretation of the viewer. It is more than capturing a moment. The image must evoke a feeling, reflection or question.

De schoonheid van het dagelijks leven en hoe mensen zich daarin bewegen in al hun pracht, kracht, kwetsbaarheid, eenzaamheid en soms absurditeit zijn voor mij (Marieke Boon, Delft, 1966) een constante bron van verwondering en inspiratie. De focus ligt hierbij op sociaal-documentaire fotografie en seriematige fotografie waarin de natuur en mijn directe leefomgeving gebruikt worden als metaforen voor grotere thema’s. In mijn werk ga ik op zoek naar de sporen die mensen nalaten, zowel fysiek als emotioneel. Voor mij zit de schoonheid daarbij vooral in de details. Eenzaamheid en vergankelijkheid zijn terugkerende thema’s, maar bezien met een relativerende blik waarbij hoop en humor ook een rol spelen. Het verhaal achter een foto is voor mij belangrijk, maar ik laat het ook graag open voor de interpretatie van de kijker. Het gaat om meer dan het vastleggen van een moment. Het beeld moet een gevoel, reflectie of vraag oproepen.
