Sereen. The waste bin, wrappings, rubbish from the street. It is not unusual for artists to use discarded materials and found objects to create their new artworks. They choose these waste materials for various reasons. They may see something in it that triggers them. The material is not a blank canvas, but has history and therefore meaning, it has an autonomous quality.

They find themselves in good company: many who belonged to the Fluxus, Zero and Arte Povera movement came before them. Arte Povera artists sometimes even destroyed their art when the exhibit was over.

Not buying new materials can also be an act of resistance, a protest against the waste of excellent basic materials or against the extreme amounts involved in the art trade.

‘POUBELLE’ – the curators Mirjam Berloth and Lisbeth Parisius, whose work can also be seen in the exhibition – have invited the artists to participate in this short group exhibition in the Kunstkapel (Art Chapel) in the Beatrixpark in Amsterdam

The Art Chapel / De Kunstkapel, Beatrixpark, Prinses Irenestraat 19, Amsterdam.
